An Outfit Is All About Accessorising

When you’re picking out an outfit for the day, what are the main things you tend to focus on? Do you chop and change between a few jumpers and hoodies for a casual look, or hold up a a few statement dresses and skirts against you?

When it comes to fashion, the main focus is usually on the large pieces (or what I call statement pieces) that we wear. Why? They stand out the most. I mean people are most likely going to notice a dress or jacket before they notice your accessories (unless you’re going bold and extravagent with them!)

To be honest, I love accessorising and it’s never a bad idea to include a couple of accessories into your outfits. They can help create a balanced look with minimal effort. They may not stand out like a great coat, but they can certainly add some visual interest to your outfits. That’s why you should consider accessories as something simple and small that can have a huge impact on your outfit.

That being said, it’s not just accessories that can make a difference. In this post, let us check out some simple things you can add / change about your outfits to make them more interesting.

Socks & Tights

Socks and tights can add a surprising amount of interest to your outfits. Of course, they need to actually be seen if they’re going to make a difference, which is why they’re typically worn with skirts, dresses and other clothes that expose your legs. You can find a surprising number of unique tights with special patterns so they don’t always have to be plain black or white. Tights are most often worn with dresses and one-piece clothes, but they can also be worn with skirts and shorts depending on the type of outfit you’re putting together.

Socks are another consideration for legwear. Socks tend to be rather plain and are usually black or white, however they are making a comeback. You can get lots of unique sock designs and lengths. Whether it’s pairing knee-high socks with long skirts and shorts or getting a unique and interesting pair of regular socks to go with your trainers or pumps, there are lots of options out there to try out.

Caps & Hats

Caps and hats can create an interesting look with the rest of your outfit. When going for a casual or streetwear-inspired look, baseball caps are the go-to choice. They’re inexpensive, they’re made by lots of streetwear brands and they’re super easy to wear. If you have long hair, you can even fit a ponytail through the back to create a very classic look. For colder weather, I love to go for a beanie hat! These hats are warm, they come in lots of great colours and they pair well with almost anything.

For something a bit more chic, you could try pairing a fedora or bucket hat with your outfit. These are a little harder to wear since they might interfere with your hairstyle. They also work with specific kinds of casual outfits, however they can be challenging to work into your everyday wardrobe. For something a bit more elegant, there are bow hats and vintage saucer hats that you can try. These usually have space for lots of accessories and flowers on top, making them more suited for elegant outfits with dresses and similar one-pieces.

Accessories For Your Face

There are a number of different accessories that you can place on your face. For starters, a good pair of sunglasses or eyeglasses (specs) can make a huge difference to the framing of your face. In fact, a lot of people actually own frames with clear lenses (I know right!). Even if they don’t need to wear glasses, they can still wear great-looking frames to change their appearance, giving a smart (or nerd-type). A great website to check out is https://www.eyeglasses.com to as they have a ton of different frames for your face. If you actually wear glasses, you can get your prescription from your optometrist and give it to these services. You can then get a custom pair of glasses at a much cheaper price and with more choice to pick from.

Piercings are also common facial accessories, whether it’s the real thing or a fake to add to your outfits. Jewellery can be hard to pair with outfits, but the general rule of thumb is to not mix and match different metals as they can create an unbalanced look. Instead, focus on just one type of metal if possible and try to match gemstone colours with the rest of your outfit. This is why it’s helpful to have a large collection of accessories! Lastly, as we are in the midst of a pandemic, a huge variety of face masks are now available so you can glam up your outfit with minimal effort. While it’s only a temporary thing due to world circumstances, face masks are actually really popular in Asian countries as a fashion accessory that also protects you from dust and allergens.

Never Underestimate Other Key Accessories

One of the big advantages of using more accessories in your outfit; it can change your appearance with very little effort and it adds more to your overall look. Adding a dangling necklace to an outfit can add a lot of interest to your appearance without changing much at all. Also, accessories can be mixed and matched across multiple outfits. You can even use them as the focus of your outfit as well if they stand out enough. This is common for statement pieces that are loud and interesting enough to serve as the main point of attention. These are usually paired with plain or subtle clothes that don’t have unique designs and patterns. This makes way for your accessories and allows them to come through as the focus of your outfit – a statement piece basically!

Overall, don’t underestimate the value of accessories in your outfits. They can have a huge impact on your outfits and are just as important as the rest of your clothes. Building up a big collection of accessories so that you can mix and match them with your outfits, but it can get a little overwhelming at times. Having a rotation of accessories is always a good idea.
